Gym Membership

My boyfriend, C, and I went to check out the gym, but decided to pass on the “deal.”  While the facility was absolutely gorgeous (new pools, new machines, tvs, classes, numerous courts, etc), the gym manager reminded me of a stereotypical used car salesman (fake tan and teeth to boot).  I was amused; C was put off.

Our salesman told us that their deal was ending in two days so to take advantage of the deal, we’d have to sign up by tomorrow.  The deal kept getting sweeter as we became more hesitant to sign up.  Of course, all of the prices were inflated to start with, but he initially reduced the $200 sign up fee to $79 and lowered the monthly payments from $300 each to $81 for both of us.  C mentioned he had a good gym at work and the $79 sign up fee magically disappeared too.

The salesman clearly became more desperate as the conversation with C continued.  He said that the monthly price kept lower class individuals from bringing down the atmosphere.  That this was a clean, family oriented unlike 24 hour fitness.  He told us that he had a membership at 24 hour just because it worked for him as a 30 year old single man.  C later told me his interpretation… Salesman goes to hit on girls at 24 hour.

Salesman lost big points though when he assumed C and I were married.  1. We’re not wearing rings.  2. He has our names and our last names are different; thus, there’s no reason to make conclusions about our status as he did.  3. Has he never seen a young couple inquire about gym membership together?

He seemed to hint that we would only get the deal if we were related and pushed us to declare our “situation” to him.  Well if you’re not married, what’s your deal… are you business partners?  A few minutes later we were saying “goodbye” to salesman and a firm “no thank you” to gym membership.
