John Hopkins University ABSN

In 13.5 months, it is possible to earn a BSN from JHU in Baltimore. Apparently there are 150 spots for 1000 applicants so it’s a long shot. If I applied for this program, it would start June of 2012 and end in July of 2013. However, it costs $62k for tuition alone!
I would also need to get As in the following:
- Anatomy and Physiology
- Microbiology
- Nutrition
- Human Development Across the Life Span and
- Statistics.
Applications must be sent in by November 1st! 11/1/2012, you are on my calendar!

TEAS Results

Well, I didn’t fail. I actually did MUCH better than I expected.
I read a post at allnurses.com where someone posted their scores & that person was accepted to Samuel Merritt University. This is something of a relief because my scores are higher.
I may take it one more time next summer just to see if I can improve my score. I still want to be as competitive as possible if I decide to apply to UCLA or UW.
I think this result will give me a few points on my applications. Hopefully, I will get into a good program with my TEAS score, grades, and position as a volunteer at a hospital. I was at the hospital last night and one of the RNs said, “You are so lucky!” I asked her why and apparently her sister, who is an RN, applied to volunteer and did not get selected. I wonder, is just BEING in a hospital becoming competitive?

If At First You Don’t Succeed, Try, Try Again

Well that went terribly. I took the TEAS yesterday and I’m pretty sure I failed. I barely finished the math section in time and was REALLY rushing in the end. I didn’t have a clue on half of the science questions and I doubted myself on many of the english questions. I feel awful.
There wasn’t even an option to take it on a computer, so I won’t receive my score until Monday. I’m already planning to take it again next summer.
I did get a chance to see Samuel Merritt University in Sacramento. Honestly, I wasn’t too impressed. There were no signs to indicate the presence of a nursing school, which shares a single building with three other companies (e.g. Comcast). The school uses a few suites in the building as classrooms and shares a small bathroom with the rest of the floor.
I am still planning to apply to SMU, but I was slightly disappointed in the “campus.”

Nursing Entrance Exam: TEAS
Posted in Applying to Nursing School, Nursing tagged nursing at 11:42 am by sillylittlestudent
Today is the day I take my nursing entrance exam! I can’t believe how quickly 6/24 has come. Everyone tells me it’s not a big deal, but I’m still nervous! I haven’t seen these types of math problems since high school, which was a LONG time ago!
There are four sections: reading, math, english, and science. I’m not sure if I should take the online version and receive my results immediately or the paper version and wait a few weeks. I don’t know if I’m emotionally prepared for a low score!!

Learning A Language: Spanish
Posted in Applying to Nursing School, Law School, Nursing, Spanish tagged law, nursing, spanish at 3:06 pm by sillylittlestudent
I live in California, which has a growing Hispanic population. I’ve realized that learning Spanish would be a huge asset for both law and nursing. It may even help my application stand out for nursing programs and future job applications.
One of the first things I have learned is in order to learn Spanish, I need to learn basic grammar. Grammar falls by the wayside after about 2nd grade in the United States. I barely remember a thing, but that will have to change if I have any hope of constructing a proper sentence:
Seven Simple Tenses:
- Present Indicative (I eat)
- Imperfect Indicative (I was eating)
- Preterit (I ate)
- Future (I shall eat)
- Conditional (I would eat)
- Present Subjunctive (That I may eat)
- Imperfect or Past Subjunctive (That I might eat)
A very useful verb to know is tener (to have):
- tengo
- tienes
- tiene
- tenemos
- teneis
- tienen
Tengo mucha hambre! – I am very hungry!
Cuantos anos tienes? – How old are you?
Que tienes? – What’s the matter?
And my favorite… Tengo que estudiar. – I have to study.

Back to School

Today was my first class for Summer semester at community college. I am trying to finish my pre-reqs so I can apply to nursing programs next Fall. I will be spending every Mon-Thurs in chemistry lecture and lab (5 P.M. to 9:30 P.M.), which leaves little room to keep up with my evening jogging routine.
I plan to work hard for the A in this class so I can get a good letter of recommendation and maintain a high GPA!
A letter of recommendation is required for most nursing programs. I am planning to apply to at least 5 nursing programs in California and at least 3 nursing programs out of state. I will probably ask this professor to write a letter for my UCLA School of Nursing application, which I will send in December 2011.
