Give 10, Get 1.

Posted in Clothes tagged at 8:00 pm by sillylittlestudent

I have a weakness for designer clothes, but with law school and nursing I don’t have much money to play with.  I love clothes, but you would never know it by looking at my wardrobe.  My clothes are embarrassingly old and out of style because I haven’t really updated them in the past five years.

C and I made a deal donate 10 items from our closets.  I’m going home tonight to look through my stuff, but it really won’t take me long to find 10 pieces I NEVER wear.

Since I’m donating 10 items, I figure I can pick up one new item!  I’ve picked a Rachel Pally (www.rachelpally.com) top that is such a beautiful, bright yellow.  It is normally $160, but I found it for $32!

Discount Stores

C has been introducing me to Marshalls, Ross, Nordstrom Rack, and even the 99 cent store.  I don’t want to seem like a snob, but my parents never took me to these stores and for some reason I never ventured to check them out.

I really feel like I’ve been missing out!  I’ve spent thousands of dollars on shoes, clothes, and miscellaneous essentials that I could have easily picked up for 1/4th of the price!

I’m now much more aware of how much I spend on items.  If I can get an idea of the true value of items, then I’ll know when to stock up if I see a REALLY good deal.  For instance, I recently picked up a pack of 12-ounce bottles of Bausch and Lomb eye contact solution from Walgreens for only $6.99!  Regular price is $16-18 for two bottles!

And tomorrow I’ll be wearing my new black business shoes, which were only $20 from Marshalls.   I’m especially excited, not only because the shoes are REALLY cute, but also because they are Report pumps (normally $100).

What Not To Wear

At least what not to wear to work…

The one shoulder is IN, but I still don’t think they’re appropriate for the office.

Fun and flirty, but not very professional.  I think I’m doing a good job of resisting the urge to follow trends & instead look for classic styles that I can use all the time!

Soft Skin

While you may need tough skin to make it through law/nursing school, you certainly don’t literally need to have a rough exterior.  My mom recently gave me an item from her Mary Kay Private Spa Collection package and I LOVE it!  It’s the Extra Emollient Night Cream pictured below.  (Retail value is about $13)

This moisturizer comes in a tall, skinny tube and can be used to treat even the driest parts of your body.  It reminds me of chap stick or Vaseline, which may be because the first ingredient listed is petrolatum.  Because it is so sticky, I can only see using it at night.  If you wear it during the day, it is likely to attract dirt and other unwanted particles that will cling to your skin.

I am constantly on the lookout for new products and this is definitely one of the better skin care products to use at night.

New Gym Tomorrow

They sucked me in with their summer promo!  Tomorrow I’m going to check out the NEW location with their fancy new weights and machines.

My boyfriend and I signed up, but I doubt our schedules will allow us to workout together.  I’m going tomorrow to hopefully do some weights and walk/jog about three miles.  In this heat, it might even be nice to go for a swim!

I currently have access to free gyms at my law school, the hospital, and the community college.  I’m not really sure if it would EVER be worth it to pay gym membership fees.  However, I’d really like to save up to buy a treadmill of my own.  Unfortunately, this will probably have to wait until after I finish law school 😦

What to Wear to Class

Posted in Law School tagged , , , at 1:27 pm by sillylittlestudent

When I was in high school, what to wear to school was never an issue because I had a uniform.  Plaid skirt, white blouse… the end.

Gone are the days of simplicity and predictability.  Now I’ve found myself faced with the challenge of maintaining a wardrobe of professional attire without spending ridiculous sums of money.  I do LOVE clothes, I just hate that they are so expensive!

Everyone treats clothes differently.  One guy I know has worn the same three shirts EVERY time I’ve seen him (it’s been two years now and I’ve seen him a lot).  A girl I know comes to class in pajama bottoms on a regular basis.  Some wear suits, some wear scrubs, others wear basketball shorts.  It’s all over the place.

Interestingly, I don’t think anyone wears Ed Hardy in law school.

I don’t really think it matters what you wear, but your clothes can make a statement about the type of person you are.  If you wear pjs, people may think you are lazy.  If you wear nice slacks with a ironed shirt and tie, people may think you are responsible.  These small impressions may be important.

I had to consider the other day what I was wearing and I’ll have to admit it wasn’t great.  I haven’t changed my style much since college and my clothes are more “trendy” than professional.  I’m quite fond of the boho look, but am quite aware I need to grow up and start wearing a more mature, professional look.
